Byron Bay Skatepark & Recreation Precinct

Consultation has concluded

The Sandhills Estate is a vital parcel of open space in the centre of Byron.

Over the years, the space has become tired and under-utilised, with an increase in anti-social behaviour and a lack of community ownership.

The estate has the potential to become an important link between the Byron Rec Grounds and Main Beach and be a critical East-West pedestrian connector across the town centre.

We have the opportunity to reinvigorate the space, open up access-ways and create a true community hub in a beautiful natural setting.

In April 2018, Council resolved to identify the Sandhills area as its preferred location for a Byron Bay Skate Park.

In the Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan, Sandhills is identified as a location fit to be a ‘community destination for all ages, integrated with an eco-friendly setting’.

It is proposed the Sandhills Estate is the ideal location for a multi-generation use activities precinct, including:
-the construction of a regionally significant all abilities skate park
- an educational ‘biodiversity boardwalk’ through protected wetland area within the site
- a playground, barbecues, toilets and other family friendly facilities

Council has submitted an Expression of Interest for the 2018 Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund for the skate project and will be developing concept designs for the precinct over the coming months.

Have your say on the future of the Sandhills precinct.

Have your say on Council's proposal to transform the existing, under-utilised Sandhills Estate in Byron Bay into a revitalised space for community connection and recreation.  Council's vision is for the space to become a multi-generational precinct featuring a skatepark, playground with equipment for all abilities, wetlands boardwalk, BBQs, toilets and picnic areas.

The Sandhills Estate is the parcel of land sitting between the Byron Bay Library, Youth Activities Centre, Sandhills Childcare Centre and Byron Courthouse. It has the potential to link the Byron Rec Grounds with Main Beach and be a crucial east-west pedestrian connection across town.
