Potholes, potholes, potholes. Living rurally in the shire

    by Lucinda, 10 days ago

The poor quality of the roads in the Shire is no secret. But, the quality of some of the roads outside of our towns is completely ridiculous. My neighbours and I have to replace our cars 5 years earlier than they would normally need to be replaced and get our cars services twice a year because they rattle to pieces. We haven't chosen to live in woop woop. We live 15 minutes form the coast!

I ask that you get properly fixing these roads into a 3-5 year plan, not a 10 year plan. I understand that their are higher... Continue reading

Geographically beautiful - keep it that way!

by Curlyloc, about 2 months ago

Byron is being loved to death.

Resources are over-stretched in servicing 2.3 million tourists annually; without any direct funds directly gained in the Byron Shire from airbnb and other holiday accommodation.

A bed tax or similar is urgently needed to set up a 'sinking fund'. These funds could then be distributed for land regeneration, vital community projects and supporting vulnerable people.

NSW government is key in the ability to increase income for community issues; but Byron Shire Council has some influence, eg:

    - improve its underperformance on DAs compared to other Councils so that DA funds etc are more quickly... Continue reading

    PROTECTION OF OUR PRECIOUS COMMUNITY

by Lin, about 2 months ago

Honouring the Indigenous Custodians of our Land.

Honouring the elder generations who have stood up and protested to keep our values of respect, kindness towards the environment and each other.

This means, low key buildings in the village including Byron.

This means providing affordable housing for tenants to provide safety and support to those who face homelessness.

This means reducing Airbnb rentals so there are more vacancies available for tenants and putting a ceiling on the cost of rentals so they become more realistic.

This means providing more skate parks for our children.

This means reducing the number of multi-million... Continue reading

    Housing Shortage and AirBnB

by Land Economist, about 2 months ago
The death of our community is in a big part due to AirBnB and the loss of full time rental accommodation. It is folly to think of Council or developers providing a large supply of low cost housing as it hasn't worked here or anywhere else. What has worked in many other places around the world that have been suffocated by AirBnB was to ban it totally from their communities. We need to look to other places around the world to see examples of what has and has not worked and to be real about the solutions.

    Loved, but not overrun

by TAS64, about 2 months ago
We allow owners to AIRBNB their properties when they are present, for a certain # of days a year.

We encourage environmental tourism by individuals, we don’t allow buses up on Lighthouse Hill.

West Byron sells a small # of individual blocks on which the owner is encouraged to build what they want. No developers allowed, no land banking is allowed, use the approval in a certain time frame or you lose it, you can’t sell approval to someone else.

    At the Crossroads

by Goonengerry, about 2 months ago
We are going to spend these 10 years restoring this place from the pressures of its own successes.

This decade will see a re-balancing of the environment and our social fabric as we design our villages and towns to more serve the residents and our eco-systems.
